FLY FISHING TIPS

HOOK SHARPNESS

A hook sharpener is a very important part of tackle to carry with you when fly fishing.
The hook points can become dull and sometimes you will notice that the very point of the hook becomes bent out.
Trout in particular have very bony mouths and more often than not, you will miss takes because your hook is not as sharp as it could be.
A couple of strokes on a small hook sharpener is usually all that is required to get the perfect point back on your fly and put more fish on the bank.
There is no excuse not to carry a small hook sharpener as a basic one will cost you around £3 going up to more deluxe models that are diamond coated and cost around £7.

TUITION

The easiest part of becoming a fly angler is going in to your local tackle shop and buying all the kit.
All good tackle shops like Veals will have experts on hand to help you choose the correct tackle for the fisheries that you are likely to be going to.
The hardest part and the most daunting part of fly fishing is learning to cast.
Done correctly you will be able to make casting look graceful, feel effortless and cast along way.
Done incorrectly it will look clumsy, feel like very hard work and the line will quite often land in a heap.
The one top tip we can offer to people wanting to start the amazing sport of fly fishing is to get some tuition.
Most good local trout lakes will offer tuition and if they don’t, they usually will know someone who does.
A couple of lessons is normally all that is required to get you on the way by learning the correct techniques from the beginning and will be money well spent.
